London 2012 Olympic Bid finish line

Designhive is proud to unveil 4 images and two short films; which have been commissioned to support the London 2012 Olympic Bid. The images unveiled today by London 2012 will support the final part of the Bid before the decision is announced in Singapore on July 6th.

So far London has proved a strong contender. The International Olympic Committee's Evaluation Commission learlier this month praised the 'very high quality' of London's bid for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The blueprint for Britain's latest Olympic Bid is based on extensive use of world-famous sporting venues, much loved London landmarks, rapid new transport connections and state-of-the art sports facilities. Designhive provided some 25 visualisations earlier in the year to show how these venues would look. Most of London's proposed Olympic venues already exist, reducing the cost and complexity of staging the London Games, which are expected to return a £100 million surplus to the IOC and British sport.

Looking forward the London 2012 team is now preparing for its final bid city presentation in Singapore 6 July and is continuing to build momentum around the world as it explains its concept for an Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in the 21st Century. These last designs and short films support some of the strongest aspects of our proposed Olympic Stadium. Designhive has created images that pan out from the corporate box across the Stadium crowd to the Olympic torch and 100 metre finish line. Other images show how the Stadium would look in ‘Legacy mode’ as a scaled down 25,000 seat athletics stadium which will house the proposed London Olympic Institute, a new Olympic centre of excellence for elite and community sport.

For the short films Designhive recruited local school children from Busbridge Primary School, Godalming, Surrey to wave flags and banners. The filmed images were then used in the final animations. The final images show a state of the art Stadium built specifically for athletics and the images convey the atmosphere and buzz of the games with passionate, action and award ceremonies. The views also show just what the actual spectators will see.

James Bulley, Director of Infrastructure said of Designhive’s professional attitude and high standard, “At all times the Designhive team was extremely helpful in their approach to the project, and always provided a high level of attention to detail, being flexible in incorporating the many changes and modification required by London 2012 to produce the best possible end result – which we believe speak for themselves.”

If the designs prove to be the winning force behind the Candidate File it will call for double celebrations as this year Designhive celebrate their fifth anniversary. Janine Tijou, Director of Designhive said; “Designhive is committed to offering the best quality our industry can produce, delivering work in a professional and timely manner. Our passion for excellence allowed us to win the London 2012 Olympic Candidate File commission working closely with HOK Sport Venue and Events producing over 25 Olympic images. We wish the London 2012 team the very best of luck in the bid and truly believe that London is the leading contender!”

In Jonathan Wells own words.......

I have listed the basic steps for the animations below:   We initially produced the 4 still images and from them the Olympic and Legacy internal stadium views were chosen to animate. The brief was really to bring all the elements seen within the still images to life.   Each animation was broken down into a few different areas:   Foreground crowd: As the foreground crowd was going to be one of the major parts of the animation, this needed to give the right feel and excitement to the animation.  We filmed people cheering, waving flags etc on a green screen.  We filmed the people on their own and in couples so that we had more control over building up the crowd. Each piece of footage then had to masked and keyed in order to remove the green screen and leave us with the cheering crowd which could be dropped into the base render of the stadium.   FOP: The Field of Play was brought to life using, RPC people and Character Studio bipeds for the athletes and judges. These were rendered in 3DS Max as a separate layer for compositing in Combustion.   The Background crowd/ flags and camera flashes: These were animated using various methods and particle systems in Combustion.  We needed to make the crowd look lively with lots of motion and colour.  The camera flashes add that extra bit of realism to the animation.   The Olympic Flame: Again this was created using a particle system in Combustion.   The Video Screen footage and Blimp were separate layers in the composition.   All these layers were built up in the Combustion file.  They were then individually colour corrected and adjusted to enhance the overall look of the animation.  The final composition was then rendered out as a targa sequence.
