Senior Designer Is Awarded Mark Of Excellence |
Jonathan WellsSenior Designer at Designhive has been selected from 1,000’s of competition entrants for the much-coveted accolade of inclusion in this year’s EXPOSÉ Art Annual. Jonathan’s entry caught the judges’ eye with his innovative use of light in images for the Symphony Centre.
The Annual, now in its third year will go on sale in August. It showcases the world’s best CG artists and designers. The book is openly regarded as the highest quality publication for the computer graphic and design artists’ community. Within the book, specific categories identify image genres. Jonathan entered the Architectural category and did not only get a place in the book but also won an Excellence Award with his design for the Symphony Centre.
Jonathan explains the idea behind the design, “ I wanted to produce two images which show how the mood and ambience of a space can be dramatically changed by the use of light. The inspiration for the space came from the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Centre. I was interested in how the curved glass facade allowed sunlight to flood into the lobby space and how this light changed from day to night. Materials also played a large part in the project, in particular how different materials react when subjected to different lighting conditions. I’m very excited that I have been given a Mark of Excellence this year.”
Wells used photographs of the Symphony Centre as the base for the design of his lobby space and all the modelling was done in 3ds max. The lighting and rendering for the project was done in Vray. A small amount of post-production was done on each image to add the background environment and glass reflections etc. Wells worked on the images for around three weeks in his spare time from work.
Daniel Wade, Managing Editor of Ballistic Media , talks of EXPOSÉ 3: “The EXPOSÉ books and awards continue to be a focal point of Ballistic Media’s goal to advance and grow the digital arts industry worldwide. With each new edition of EXPOSÉ the number and artistic quality of entries have grown substantially. Close to five thousand entries were submitted for EXPOSÉ 3 across twelve categories, with only one in 25 entries making it into print and fewer still being judged award-worthy.”
