Last year, we had the opportunity to create visualizations for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s finalist proposal called Bapiiwin. It wasn’t just the professional aspect that engaged us but the cause it stood for — it aimed to pay tribute to Canada’s Indigenous Two-Spirited and LGBTQ2+ communities while remembering those affected by the LGBT Purge.
The proposed monument consists of an assembly of stainless-steel wands, each representative of flag poles stripped of their flags. These could be explored from multiple pathways, symbolizing the many ways towards justice for LGBTQ2+ communities. In the center of the design, a low, heated table can be found which provides a place for personal reflection and collective healing.
