Building 50 of the Traverse City State Hospital was designed by Architect Gordon W. Lloyd following the plan devised by Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride. The building was completed in 1885 to house the mentally ill under the leadership of Dr. James Decker Munson, and later came to be used in the treatment of a number of contagious outbreaks. From the 1950s through the 1980s, the hospital was gradually decommissioned and fell into various stages of disrepair due to neglect.
Like many, I grew up exploring the grounds, and have always been fascinated by the architecture and stories. Thankfully, recent decades have seen the renovation and revitalization of the entire property by The Minervini Group . Today you can visit The Village at Grand Traverse Commons while you shop its markets, visit its businesses, meet its residents, and take tours of the architecture and history of the place.
I've remained fascinated with the space and have begun to digitally recreate the spaces that once were. Through site surveys, photo research, and photogrammetry, we've created a 3D model of the building as accurate as we are able. This version is modeled in 3dsMAX and rendered with Octane. Textures were created from manually, using photographs of original materials when possible. I welcome any questions and feedback.
(I tried submitting for 3D Awards consideration, but the box is greyed out. Any tips?)
