Concrete Petals at Sunset
In this artistic reinterpretation of Félix Candela’s masterpiece Los Manantiales, I aimed to capture the revolutionary spirit of his thin-shell concrete design through a nostalgic lens. The hyperbolic paraboloid umbrella structure, resembling an opening flower, is dramatically silhouetted against a warm sepia sky. The composition places the building on a reflective plane of water, creating a perfect mirror image that doubles the impact of its distinctive concrete petals. The intentional backlighting from the setting sun emphasizes the structure’s graceful geometry while palm trees and overhanging foliage add organic framing elements. This treatment transforms the 1958 architectural icon into a timeless scene that bridges past and present, highlighting how Candela’s mathematical precision created poetry in concrete.
