'Present but Never There'
" The video started as an experiment with a couple of iPhones and selfie stick. I composited a video of multiple exposures of myself but for various reasons (including the usual horror of seeing myself) I searched for ways to problematize it. Neil Griffiths, a digital artist friend ( and fellow DBOX partner), suggested that we put the video I had created on a TV and throw it out of a window (virtually). At first the idea was a bit too ‘Keith Moon rock-cliche’ for me, but I trusted Neil’s artistic instincts and together we made a new video that is ultimately conceptual and interpretive. We also worked hard to further abstract the piece visually. It was critical to me that is wasn’t a ‘photo-realistic computer graphics short’. It needed it’s own aesthetic and to be a bit rough around the edges as if it is struggling with ‘beauty‘, frequency and time. I wanted it to feel constantly on the verge of disconnection. Hats off to Neil's beautiful CG work” mb
