ah, I understand your last comment with regards to the hdri + mr workflow.
I would not give up on image based lighting in MR just yet. Have you tried the ctrlGhost shaders yet? I was able to get some sweet IBL shots using Importons and Irradience particles.

You can actually get shadows from HDRIs... Finally!

I sometimes actually prefer the look of MR, it can be moody, a bit rough, unpolished and less generic. Saying that the HDRi workflow, (or lack of it) is tempting me away to the dark side! Perhaps this will be my last MR project?

VRAY is very similar. I tried vray for sketch up and it worked very well. I just prefer MR as I came from a design/engineering background and MR shipped with solidworks, proEngineer, and autoCAD so I just used it more frequently.

Yes rendered in Mental Ray (MR) with a HDRi and Daylight system. They arent a happy couple however!
