I sure HAVE to look in to these great tips next time I'm handed a revit project. Exterior renderings don't seem to be needing much of electricity outlets and plumbing tubes and that sort!

I agree with you that working with a revit file is heavy. I'm using a revit/ 3d max workflow since 2007. I work with 2 models of revit. 1 is a construction model and a 2nd is a light weight model with copy/monitor. Fbx transfert to max and the work is pretty fine.
Copy/monitor is a kind of xref. When two models are linked, you can substitute one geometrie to a lighter one with out losing geometrie precision.
Next time you receive a model, you can ask that the walls, roofs, floors and ceilings have no composition in the geometrie. Much more light and less polygone tilted.
