Hi Matthew, for dusk dawn shots and overcast skies with no real 'Direct" light source I use HDRI's within a MR skylight. If there is a direct light source or obvious light source I will include a directional light of some kind and match it to the scene and also do a bit of work in post to get the feel I want. I still use mental ray and unfortunately it does a pretty bad job of lighting scenes using HDRI maps ouside of ambient lighting (unlike vray which seems to to a GREAT job.)
Keep at it with your sky for this shot....the right one will really make this image POP!

Hi Mark,
Thanks very much for the feedback. Yes, I did indeed used Vue for the sky, but I am very new to the software. Atmospheres seem very simple to edit in Vue, however they are quite tricky to perfect and I still have a lot to learn. I was not 100% satisfied with this one, but it took a couple of days to bake to an hdri, so I thought that I better use it! I may attempt to make a new sky for the next renders.
What are you using for the skies in your work?
Cheers.

The rust/wear on the metal work looks great Matthew and the DOF is effective. I don't have much experience with Vue and was wondering if that was what you used for the sky? The sky seems just a little underdone to me compared to the detail in the rest of the shot. Great concept though. Looking forward to your following additions in this set.
