I had another idea, and I'm sure this ones right...
the grid effect comes about when you scale a reflective object. in 3ds Max, you reset the 'Xform' of an object to reset the scale to 1 and remove the reflection distortions. good luck. my computer is now defrozen so I'll get on with my work.

James says that's not going to help with the bump map, and I agree since the water surface already has a bump.
If the problem is the squares on the left in the water then check to see that you don't have two objects occupying the same space, which could cause this effect, or maybe you have hidden objects that are rendering and then showing up in the reflection.

try adding a noise map to bump
