The traditional role of the architect is evolving. One prominent example of this is the green revolution. Architects place increased emphasis on energy savings and other architectural elements that impact our environment. Architects see the larger picture. Today, that larger picture includes personal security.
Architects, like physicians, also specialize. One example of this specialization includes Security Architecture. This field is not about personal security. A security architect is the individual charged with maintaining the security of corporate computer systems. The security architect in this context must anticipate the strategies a hacker might use in gaining unauthorized access to a company’s computer system; develop counter measures and stay abreast of current technological developments. Often, the best security architects are former hackers suggesting that the old adage, “it takes a thief to catch a thief” may have merit.
The field requires a thorough understanding of computer systems, knowledge of system weaknesses, and of course, expertise to resolve any weaknesses discovered. The security architect also bears responsibility for establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and protocols that protect the integrity of the computer system. Lastly, the security architect must establish counter measures to block unauthorized access attempts.
When Will We See the Rise of Personal Security Architects?
Once only a concern of the über-wealthy, famous, and infamous, personal security concerns are becoming mainstream; domestic terrorist threats, concerns of economic collapse, severe weather threats and escalating crime rates have entered the consciousness of Middle America.
Evidence of this is abundant. A quick Google search for “survivalists” or “preppers” reveals the existence of hundreds of websites, blogs and even a National Geographic series on the subject. This mindset is clearly becoming an aspect of our culture.
After reviewing several sites devoted to architecture, I had no luck finding anything relative to personal security concerns, the closest thing I could find related to security, was a security desk, designed for the lobby of a large bank. Frankly, in trying to seek architectural assistance in the field of personal security, I hit a brick wall.
The Personal Security Architect’s Role
An architect’s responsibilities extend beyond four walls and a roof; architects solve problems and meet needs.
While, to my knowledge, no architects are specializing in the field of personal security as it relates to home architecture, the demand is certainly out there. The role of such a specialist would include designing or retrofitting homes which incorporate the latest in personal protection technology and design concepts. In short, meet the needs of those with a preparedness or survivalist mindset. This extends to weather events as well. The following examples provide insights:
• Panic rooms
Panic rooms, also known as safe rooms, provide a secure retreat for families threatened by intruders, severe weather conditions and other risks.
• CCTV systems
Incorporating closed circuit television systems can alert families to pending danger and provide eyes-on intelligence. Security Cameras can be incorporated both inside and outside the home.
• Landscaping
Building sites can be selected on the basis of advantageous natural features allowing the architect to incorporate the terrain and other naturally occurring features in to the design of the home. The premises should be landscaped in a manner consistent with security concerns.
• Storage
Adequate storage facilities should be integrated into the design, enabling residents to be self sufficient for extended periods.
• Power systems
Alternative energy sources are a key consideration. The collapse of the power infrastructure should not preclude the homeowner from remaining in place. Solar, wind or battery power, preferably a combination of all three, should be in place.
• Water systems
Homes dependent on public water supplies are vulnerable. An alternative water supply, preferably beyond stored water, should be integrated into the design. This may mean a private well, a system to capture and purify rain water or other solutions to water shortages.
I have no doubt that architects with expertise in these areas exist. I believe substantial opportunities are being squandered by not making these skills broadly known to the general public.
Moreover, In the event of a catastrophic event such as a hurricane or tornado, a man made event such as a home invasion or burglary or widespread civil disobedience due to shrinking government funds or local government bankruptcies—responsible professionals in the field of architecture can make a significant contribution to society.
Using their skills and expertise to make families safer under adverse circumstance is a noble and worthwhile pursuit. A pursuit that should have a significantly higher profile than it presently enjoys.
