The Cappellini fortress has been abandoned for a long time and in a state of decay for many years, reducing itself to an ordinary warehouse with no apparent function. In 2017, it obtained from the Regional Commission for the cultural heritage of Sardinia of the MiBACT the declaration of cultural interest as a practical example of a coastal military settlement. Therefore, the project starts from the need to enhance such a unique architectural artifact through a strategy aiming at minimal intervention and internal redistribution. The hypothesized functions were: two exhibition rooms on two different levels, a catering area, and finally, an extension of the exhibition route by exploiting the natural slopes and the existing high-altitude paths.
In the creation of the fortress system from the end of the nineteenth century, the architectural complex established a privileged relationship by seeking dialogue and merging, for strategic-military reasons, with the coastal context, which is why the hypothesis of an extension of the exhibition itinerary becomes the pretext for the rediscovery of this landscape.
