1819 Maritime Campus Antwerp [BE]
Transformation of a brownfield into a sustainable specialised innovation campus
The idea behind the Antwerp Maritime Campus (MCA) summarises as bringing together multiple maritime operators. After demolition and remediation of the former industrial BP site in the south of Antwerp, an active campus and community arise. In a high-quality urban space with space to unwind, an innovative environment is organised around the broad maritime industry. The strategic programming and physical clustering of related business activities stimulates synergy between the various activities, knowledge exchange and interaction between users. Thus the campus is accommodates shipping industry enterprises, manufacturers and start-ups, shipowners and research and educational institutions. Public authorities, communication and data companies, lawyers and financers can also take part. The resulting innovation power develops the shipping sector in a sustainable way.
In addition to the sustainable business centre, co-working and co-creation facilities, laboratories, large R&D facilities, studios, educational facilities and other support services are also incorporated. Services, catering and relaxation areas are strategically located and designed to serve the wellbeing of users and to promote social interaction.
This striking location on the river Scheldt and nature reserve the Hobokense Polder offers exceptional qualities that are reinforced in the masterplan. Nature development and ecology are integrated into concepts for both the area development and buildings concepts. With its striking architecture, MCA becomes a destination in itself and a beacon along the Scheldt that marks the southern city entrance. The design is characterised by the combination of innovative energy, sustainability and mobility solutions.
