Fragment of "La Isla del Purgatorio" (Purgatory Island): A virtual 3D reconstruction.
Introduction:
Late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Europeans saw in the cities of River Plate (South America), an earthly paradise to live.
But too many were the immigrants that before reaching land, died in "hell of seamen" also known as "Banco Ingles" for more than three centuries.
The lucky ones managed to arrive at Purgatory`s dock on "Isla de Flores" which had its own hell.
The island gradually took an unexpected role. The one able to dominate it, would have the navigation control, and therefore, the new world`s trade.
At various times, it has been associated with different feelings: salvation, conviction, relief, life and death.
It hosted fishermen, deadly sick people, medical doctors, military men, political prisoners, priests, and even today, is an important signal for sailors.
For a long time the "Isla de Flores" became: "Purgatory Island"
The "Isla de Flores" is located about 30 Kms to S. E. Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay (South America).
It measures nearly 2 km long and its maximum width is about 400 meters. It has an irregular shape with heavy rocks, which makes it very dangerous for boats to remain nearby.
