This senior year assignment was to design a new boathouse that had a stronger connection to the city, maintaining a more integrated space with the surrounding Georgetown Waterfront. The central challenge of the project was to achieve an attractive boathouse without interfering with the flow of the overall Georgetown waterfront. The key objective was to propose a simple building, which builds upon the existing program of the boathouse. The Boathouse has a green roof that serves as a bridge which connects the Georgetown Waterfront to the Rock Creek Waterfront. The Boathouse also boasts a glass system with a striking green roof structure that hides all of the technical features the new bridge. The roof itself serves as a bridge, but it also functions as public space for community gathering, which is common for life in Georgetown. On the front side of the Boathouse there is a viewing deck for the rowing events that take place on the Potomac River.
The Georgetown Boathouse represents a minimalist building that does not impede on the surrounding area. The design incorporates light concrete, steel, and greenery to keep the building maintenance low.
