Atalaya del Alba Cabin

Location: Restrepo, Colombia
Area: 70m²
Status: Desing process
Year: 2024

A modular cabin designed to integrate functionality, sustainability, and architectural purity in its raw form. The project adheres to bioclimatic design principles, optimizing cross ventilation, mitigating solar radiation through pergolas, lattices, and overhangs, and utilizing local materials—wood, metal, and exposed concrete—without unnecessary finishes.

Drawing inspiration from Sashimono, a traditional Japanese joinery technique, the cabin’s structural system employs precisely crafted interlocking timber connections, allowing components to fit seamlessly without mechanical fasteners. This method enhances structural integrity, durability, and aesthetic coherence by forming complex assemblies from individual wooden elements.

Oriented east-west to maximize natural light and capitalize on sunrise views, the cabin is designed to maintain thermal comfort in the warm climate of the Llanos region. Elevated on stilt foundations (pilings), the structure minimizes site impact, improves passive cooling, and mitigates risks from humidity and pests. Additionally, rainwater harvesting systems are integrated to enhance sustainability and reduce environmental impact.
